A man with his donkey carrying two sacks of wheat was on his way to the market. After a little while he was tired and they rested under a tree.

When he woke up from his nap he could not see the donkey and started searching for the donkey everywhere. On the way he met a boy, he asked the boy, “Have you seen my donkey?” The boy asked, “Is the donkey‟s left eye blind, his right foot lame and is he carrying a load of wheat?” The man was happy and said, “Yes, exactly! Where have you seen it?” the boy answered “I haven‟t seen it.” This made the man very angry and he took the boy to the village chief for punishment.

The judge asked, “Dear boy, if you had not seen the donkey, how could you describe it?” The boy answered, “I saw the tracks of a donkey and the right and left tracks were different from this. I understood that the donkey that passed there was limping. And the grass on the right side of the road was eaten but the grass on the left was not. From that I understood that his left eye was blind. There were wheat seeds scattered on the ground and I understood that he must have been carrying a load of wheat. The judge understood the boy's cleverness and told the man to forgive the boy.

The Fox and the Sick Lion

An old lion realized one day that he was too tired to hunt for his prey anymore. Sadly he went home to his den knowing that soon he would die. But before he lay down he stopped at the entrance, breathing with great difficulty. Speaking in slow, low voice he told the world of his sad condition.

The news of the lion’s illness soon spread throughout the forest and caused mush concern among the other beats. One by one they came to visit him and paid their respects. However, the lion’s age had also made him wily, and as each animal entered his lair and came within reach, they fell an easy prey to the lion, who soon grew fat.

One day early in the morning, the fox came. He was renowned for his cunning, and approached the den carefully. Standing some distance away he inquired after the lion that looked healthy and asked him if he was feeling better. “Ah, my dearest friend, ”said the lion ”Is it you? I can hardly see you, you are so far away. Come closer, please and give me some words of consolation for I have not long to live,”

The fox, meanwhile, had been looking closely at the ground in front of the lion’s den. At last he looked up, and turning to go. He remarked: “Bless you, but excuse me if I do not stay, for, to tell the truth, I feel quite uneasy at the many footsteps I see leading into your den yet none do I see emerging.”

Juhha's Wonders

Once upon a time, there was a small village in Baghdad. Its population was very small. In this village everybody knew each other and knew every little or big problems that went on in the village. In this small village there was a bakery that was popular for its delicious bread.

One day a poor old man was walking in the street passing the bakery and he stopped to smell the scent of the bread which was spreading out of the bakery.

Suddenly, the baker caught the old man and shouted at him demanding the price of bread's scent. He almost dragged him to the police.

A very famous wise man named Juhha heard the baker shouting. So he went to him and asked about the problem. Juhha stood calmly listening to the baker and he thought for a solution.

After a few minutes Juhha's eyes glistened and an amused smile was on his face. He asked the baker "How much money do you want?". The baker and poor man were astonished, but the baker answered "3 dinars". Juhha took the money out of his wallet and put it in his pocket and shook the money. "Did you hear the sound of the money?" Juhha asked. "Yes, I did", the baker replied, and with big smile Juhha said "Well then, this is the price of your bread's scent!"

Two frogs had lived in a village all their lives. They thought they would like to go and see the big city that was about ten miles away.

They talked about it for a long time and at last they set off to the city.

It was a hot day, and they soon began to feel tired. They had only gone a little way when one said to the other, "we must be nearly there, can you see the city?"

"No," said the other frog, "but if I climb on your back I might be able to see it."

So he climbed up on the back of the other frog to see the city.

Now when the frog put up his head, his eyes could only see what was behind. And not what was in the front. So he saw the village they had just left.

"Can you see the city?" asked the frog who was below.

"Yes," answered the frog who had climbed up." I can see it. It looks just like our village."

Then the frogs thought that it was not worthwhile going any further. They went back and told the frogs in the village that they had seen the city, and it was just like theirs.

Once a farmer owned a donkey and a lapdog. The donkey worked hard all day, hauling heavy loads. The lapdog stayed with his master all day, and lived in the house with him. He did not work, but was allowed to sit on the master's lap. The donkey grew jealous of the lapdog.

Perhaps if I behave like the dog, like wag my tail and jump on the master, the master will start loving me as much as he does the dog. So the donkey decided to wait for his chance.

One day, when he was left unattended, the donkey broke his halter and ran into the farmhouse kitchen. There the farmer sat at table. The donkey rushed up to him and began wagging his tail vigorously, and knocked off all the china from the table. He then started jumping around and frolicking like a little dog, and finally plonked himself down on the farmer's lap. The shocked farmer yelled for help. The farmhands came running in and dragged the donkey off to his stable, and gave him a beating he did not forget for the rest of his life.

The following text is for questions 1to 4.

A long time ago, there lived an old man in the Penanggungan Mountain. His name was Kiai Gede Penanggungan. He had supernatural power. Kiai Gede Penanggungan had a beautiful daughter named Dewi Walangangin who was not married yet. Kiai Gede Penanggungan prayed days and nights for her daughter to have a husband. One day, a young handsome man came to his place. The name of the man was Jaka Pandelengan. He wanted to be Kiai Gede Penanggungan's student. Kiai Gede agreed to have Jaka as his student with one condition that he would marry her daughter. Jaka Pandelengan and Dewi Walangangin soon got married. Kiai Gede Penanggungan taught Jaka many things.

After several years, now it was time for the couple to live separately from Kiai Gede Penanggungan. They would move to another village. Kiai Gede gave some seeds of pari or paddy to the couple. He asked the couple to plant the seeds. He also warned the couple not to be arrogant when they were rich. He wanted the couple to help poor people. The couple started a new life. They planted the seed. Soon, the seeds grew and became a lot of rice. Now the couple became very rich. The poor neighbours came to the couple to ask for some pari seeds, but the couple refused to help them.

Kiai Gede heard about the couple's bad behavior. Soon he visited the couple. He met them when the couple was working in the field. Kiai Gede talked to the couple. He reminded the couple not to be arrogant, but the couple ignored him. They said nothing to Kiai Gede. Kiai Gede got very angry. Then he said, "You two are like temples. You do not listen to me". Right after he said those words, an incredible thing happened. Slowly, Jaka and Dewi turned into temples. Because the temples stood among the pari, people then named them as Pari Temples.

Once, a fisherman named Batara Guru Sahala lived in the Batak Land. One day, he caught a fish. He was surprised to find that the fish could talk. It begged Sahala to set it free. He did accordingly.

As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that Sahala fell in love at once. He asked her to marry him. The woman agreed to marry Sahala. However, she told him that he must never let out the secret that she was once a fish. Sahala promised that he would not tell anyone about it.

They were happily married and had two daughters. Every morning Sahala went out fishing. One day, his daughters brought him his lunch. However, instead of bringing the food to their father, the two girls ate it. When Sahala knew what they had done with the meal, he got very angry. He shouted at them saying, "You behaved exactly like the daughters of the fish!”

They did not know what their father meant. They went home and asked their mother about it. Their mother was very upset. Although Sahala apologized to her, she would not forgive him for breaking his promise.

Then the earth began to shake, and the volcano started to erupt. The earth cracked and formed a big hole. It is said that the hole became the Toba Lake.

Jadi nilai moral isi cerita tersebut yaitu janganlah kita mengingkari/melanggar janji yang telah kita buat sendiri.
